Swiss Toni's guide to landscape gardening

How to point a patio by Swiss Toni of the Fast show

Pointing a patio is a little like making love to a beautiful women. First you need to ensure that the cleft is moist and free from loose material. A spouted tool is useful to apply the liquid and helps to keep the outer surfaces dry and stain free. Small, tight cracks need extra attention and I like to apply a little moisture to the insides with a finger to make sure no bits are left dry.

Your cement mixture must be applied carefully, avoiding any spillage on the outer areas and rammed in hard to  fill all recesses. If you have an unsteady hand then a plank of wood with a long slit cut into the centre can be used. Place the slit directly over the cleft and use this to guide your mixture deep into the hole, again ramming it in firmly.

Allow a little time for it to begin to go hard and then stroke the surface firmly with a damp tool applying pressure firstly along the edges which will push some of the mixture into the centre where it will form a slight mound. finally stroke the mound  firmly until it has a smooth and shiny finish (this is called polishing off).
